Why I Built 8PageZine

Zines have a wonderful DIY tradition: fold a single sheet of paper the right way and you have an eight-page booklet you can hand to a friend. The moment you want something more polished, though, you hit a wall. Design tools are either overkill, like full desktop publishing suites, or too rigid to handle the odd imposition math that folding requires. I wanted a tool that made laying out a zine as simple as dragging text and images onto a page, and then handed you a print-ready PDF that folds correctly every time.

That is why I built 8PageZine, a browser-based zine maker for designing, printing, and selling folded booklets.

What It Does

8PageZine is a browser-based tool for creating and publishing zines. You drag text, photos, and shapes onto pages to lay out pocket-sized booklets, then export print-ready PDFs to print and fold at home. No installs, no imposition headaches, no fighting with page order.

It supports more than one format:

• Booklet zines from 4 to 48 pages
• The classic one-sheet 8-page mini zine
• 16-page variants

The editor handles the imposition for you, so the pages land in the right spots on the sheet once you fold it. You focus on the content and let the tool worry about the geometry.

Autosave and Accounts

Your work autosaves in the browser for 14 days, so you can close the tab and come back without losing a layout. When you are ready to keep something permanently, sign up to save your zines for good and manage multiple editions of the same title. The optional account model means you can start creating immediately, with no signup gate standing between you and a blank page.

The Marketplace

8PageZine is not just an editor. It ships with an integrated marketplace where creators can share and sell their work. If you make a zine you are proud of, you can publish it for others to discover, read, and buy. The goal is to give the zine community a home that respects the medium: small, handmade, and personal, but with modern distribution built in.

The Tech Stack

8PageZine is built with Ruby on Rails and Hotwire (Turbo + Stimulus). The drag-and-drop editor, live page previews, and inline updates all run through Stimulus controllers and Turbo, which keeps the interface fast and responsive without shipping a heavy JavaScript bundle. Sidekiq handles background jobs like PDF generation, so exporting a print-ready file never blocks the editor.

Rails continues to be my go-to framework for shipping full-featured web applications quickly, and Hotwire makes the interactive editor feel snappy while keeping the codebase small and maintainable.
